Find your "spark bird" in West Africa

Africa is truly the best continent for avid birders and beginners alike. This unusual creature loves the wetlands of sub-Saharan Western Africa – including Senegal – avoiding the forest, desert and plains. The African Jacana has long legs and very long toes with claws that distributes their weight evenly, which allows them to walk on lily pads and other water vegetation. Their rust coloring, bright blue-and-white heads, and shrill staccato calls make them easy to spot.

Found in large populations in the islands off West Africa, including Cape Verde and Bissagos Islands, the Cory’s Shearwater is well-known for its long wing glides over the water. Brownish grey with white underparts, it can live more than 20 years, floating around the craggy rocks along the shore, finding homes in the caves and crevices – and following the fishing boats.

Found across Senegal and the Cape Verde islands, this kingfisher sports a patchwork of blue, black, white and chestnut colors, and a sharp, red bill – the perfect diving weapon. It nests in holes along steep riverbanks, and is very much at home with other birdlife within the Bissagos Islands, including the multitudes of flamingos and pelicans.
