Often referred to as the Queen of the Ocean, the elegant Northern Gannett is Iceland’s largest seabird, nesting in cliff colonies on the northern shores. Couples mate for life and engage in a unique display of kissing by rapidly scissoring their beaks. You cannot miss this beautiful creature on this circumnavigation. Try to keep an eye out as well for the Rock Ptarmigan, Golden Plover, and Common Snipe.

The only swan in Iceland, the Whooper Swan is often seen near the northern Icelandic city of Akureyri, a port on a Hurtigruten summer circumnavigation cruise of Iceland. Along with Atlantic Puffins, they are a national treasure, many finding refuge near lakes that don’t freeze due to their thermal hot springs. And although the Whooper Swan is one of the heavier flying bird species, it spends its winters far away in the UK.
